My initial inspiration for this artwork came from my partner and his miss pronunciation for the word onion. This resulted in him pronouncing it like ugg-non hence the name of the project.
I started off by directing an onion looking at the layers and seeing what I could do with it creating a collage with them. The shadows they created were really quite fascinating the way they created new and abstract shapes being a 2D thing but also being 3D.
I then went on to print with them dipping them into paint to and printing onto some different types of paper.
These are the onion segments that I had dipped into paint. I really like the way that they seem to be floating around in a timeless dimension.
I then tore up the paintings into small squares reconfiguring it as if it were a jigsaw. This was quite a fun thing to do as my family got involved in the process. The only thing was to try and not piece it back together in the correct order.
I liked this the torn edges reminded me of a fabric patchwork. With torn and distorted edges that don’t all line up with one another.
I took the painting onto glass bring able to view the garden through it with the lines highlighting areas and directing your eye to different points within the garden. I thought this piece was ok although I’m not too sure how far I could go with it.
Back to the fabric and torn edges I decided to lightly stain and paint onto an old t-shirt and follow with the same process as before with cutting up etc.
I then went on to stitch all the squares together making an interesting patchwork. I’m really happy with the way the light passes through the piece, not too much but just enough.
