After looking at the culture behind zines and their nature to share small artworks created by artists, collectives and organisations. I have found strong connections between both the seed share culture and the world of artists zines. The theme of sharing a small delicately made package is something that anyone can and will cherish. I myself have participated in both seed/ plant shares and zine shares in the past and the conversations that can be had around the subject matters are simply amazing and is something that I would like to do more of in the future.
Due to lockdowns I haven’t been able to share seed in the same way as I have before which has been extremely frustrating at times as you loose the personal quality that comes with sharing these intimate parcels.
I have always been fascinated with the shapes and shadows that are created by dead, decaying and dormant plants and the way that the light passes through creating interesting shadows that converse with both each other and other plants in the garden.
Whilst researching I came across an interesting article that spoke about the clear difference between seed sharing and seed banking. If I’m honest I haven’t really thought that they were much different before. But, after reading there is a clear divide between the two acts one being an incredibly social act and the other being something very private and secluded.
The article also looks at the personal responsibilities for sharing what some call ‘legacy crops’ back to their original communities keeping social interaction and conversations to an all time high. I have attached the article below if you wish to read into this area more! I highly recommend you do as it has benefited me greatly.
