Artwork Description and Inspiration.

Going from the brief of an object not used because of the covid pandemic I decided to take inspiration form my passport. The choice of subject matter was due to the lack of international traveling I could do in the last year and a half due to multiple restrictions and lockdowns.

Presented is my resolved art work, completed in the grounds of the National Gallery Modern One in Edinburgh. I wanted to explore multiple use of line be that direction or thickness and shape also creating contrast. I wanted this to contrast with my use of costal blue water colour wash in the background and black lines in the foreground. Showing the sense of hope and longing for time away traveling. The use of blue ushers a sense of calming and escapism, something a holiday represents to me. The use of black was to illustrate harshness due to the restrictions put in place over the last 18 months.

My use of watercolour is because it is free and very fluid, it can’t be controlled to much and you almost have to let it do what it wants to do on the paper. The freedom of the water colour links well to travel before the pandemic and the freedoms we no longer have. Overall I am happy with my response to the brief, I feel the use of boxy linear shapes and the contrasting background is a successful abstract representation of my choice of object (passport) and the impact covid has had on me personally through the restrictive nature of the restrictions on my longing to travel.
